Grant Application Guidelines
|
Applications for grants are sought from organizations meeting the Foundation's criteria. Electronic submittals are welcome; however one original hard copy with a Board member's signature must be mailed to the Foundation. We accept applications at any time.
HOW TO APPLY
Please carefully complete the Western New York Foundation application form, returning a signed form with the required attachments. You may also request this form as an E-mail file by calling (716) 839-4225. Please do not place the submitted application and form in a binder or other type of cover or otherwise alter the form.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or placed in our evaluation cycle until all information is submitted. An application is incomplete if it does not contain the required attachments, is not signed and dated by a member of the board, or has unanswered questions.
All applications and additional attachments should be mailed or emailed directly to the Western New York Foundation. A written response will be sent to you when a decision has been reached by our Board.
CONTRIBUTION POLICY
- Contributions are limited to non-profit, organizations which have obtained tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code; Proof of the exemption in the form of a copy of the IRS Determination Letter must be submitted with the application for all 501(c)(3) organizations.
- Contributions are limited to agencies that are physically located in one of the seven counties of Western New York.
- Organizations are encouraged to apply for specific projects or equipment. General operating support requests are very rarely funded.
- Repetitive grants will be given a lower priority than new applicants.
- Contributions will be considered in these categories:
- Human service organizations that serve children, troubled youth, low income and needy individuals, senior citizens, victims of abuse or provide related services.
- Educational institutions, both public and private. Preferably, contributions will be directed toward the improvement of the quality of education. Ordinarily, grants will not be made to finance the expansion of a student body, the payment of scholarships or other projects normally funded through a taxing authority.
- Youth organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Junior Achievement and similar groups.
- Cultural organizations including performing arts, visual arts, historical centers, public and educational broadcasting, and other related activities.
- Environmental education and conservation programs.
- Civic service organizations that handle crime prevention, parks and recreation facilities or community development.
- "Seed money" to start a new program or organization provided that there is a strong sustainability plan.
- Contributions for the following types of groups and uses are very rarely made:
- Religious organizations for religious purposes-never.
- Endowments or scholarships.
- Grants or loans to individuals-never.
- Fund-raising events, i.e., tickets, tables, dinners, telethons.
- Political organizations, campaigns, and candidates-never.
- Operating expenses.
- Hospital campaigns.
